Pricing

What an Investigation Costs

Every investigation is priced on its own, from what you ask for: which institutions, how far back, and for how long. You see the whole quote, institution by institution, before you pay, and you pay once. There is no subscription and no monthly minimum, and signing up is free.

What a price is made of

The records come from each institution through Plaid, the data network that connects to banks. What Plaid charges for them depends on the kind of record, so the price follows the same units.

Transactions

per institution, per calendar month connected
  • Charged for each institution the account holder links, not for each account there.
  • Not charged by the month of history: two years of transactions costs what three months does.
  • One month covers the month the account holder links. Pay for more months to keep receiving new transactions as the case goes on.
  • Covers checking, savings, credit card and loan accounts, with current balances.

Statements

per statement
  • The bank’s own monthly PDF statements, exactly as it issued them.
  • The count is the months you ask for times the checking and savings accounts at that institution: six months at a bank where the account holder has two accounts is up to twelve statements.
  • Charged only at institutions that offer statements. Elsewhere the quote says so, and charges nothing for them.

Service fee

a share of the data cost
  • A set percentage of the two charges above, shown as its own line on the quote.

What you are not charged for

  • Data an institution can’t provide. The quote checks every institution you choose and charges only for what it offers.
  • Waiting. Nothing is held on your card while the account holder decides, however long that takes. If they never grant access, the quote is all you pay.
  • A connection left open. Each institution is disconnected on the plan you make when you order, so it can’t go on running up monthly charges.
  • The account holder. They never pay anything to approve access or to use their portal.

When the bill can come to more

You pay the quote when you order. Plaid’s charges can still come to more than it, in a few ways no one can rule out in advance:

  • An institution you didn’t order. The account holder can link any institution, and each other one they link is charged like one you ordered. It is downloaded and disconnected at once.
  • More accounts than you estimated. Statements are charged per account, so more checking or savings accounts means more statements.
  • A connection that runs into another month. One still downloading when a new calendar month begins is charged for both months.
  • The same institution linked twice. A second connection to the same institution is charged as a new one.

So when you order, you set a limit. Once every institution is disconnected and the bill is final, any difference, with the service fee on it, is charged to the card you paid with, up to that limit. Anything beyond it waits for your approval. Your portal shows what was quoted, what you paid, and what Plaid’s charges came to, line by line.

Connected only as long as needed

Plaid charges transactions for every calendar month an institution stays connected, so by default each one is disconnected as soon as its records are downloaded. If you need new transactions as the case goes on, choose how many months it stays connected; it is disconnected after that, and the price includes them.

The records are kept for you to download, the statements encrypted, and deleted on the date you choose when you order. You are reminded a week and a day before, and you can move the date. Once they are deleted, getting them again means a new order.

Getting a quote, step by step

This is the new-investigation form in your attorney portal. The quote is worked out as you fill it in, so you can try different institutions and date ranges before you commit to one.

  1. 1

    Name the account holder

Their email address and name. Nothing is sent to them yet.

  2. 2

    Choose the institutions

Search for each bank or card issuer by name. Each one shows what it offers through our data provider, Plaid (transactions, statements, or both), and once chosen, whether its connections are working right now.

  3. 3

    Choose how far back

Up to 24 months of transactions and up to 24 months of statements, each set on its own: two years of transactions with six months of statements is one order. Statements are counted back from the day the account holder links, so they are always the most recent ones.

  4. 4

    Estimate the accounts

At each institution that offers statements, say how many checking and savings accounts you expect the account holder to have there.

  5. 5

    Read the quote

Every institution on its own lines, then the service fee and the total. It updates as you change anything, before you commit to anything.

  6. 6

Plan the disconnect and the deletion

By default each institution is disconnected as soon as its records are downloaded. Or keep it connected for new transactions for the months you choose. Then choose how long the records are kept before they are deleted.

  7. 7

Set a limit for later charges

Read the ways Plaid’s charges can come to more than the quote, and set how much more can be charged later without asking you.

  8. 8

    Place the order and pay

You pay the quote. The invitation goes to the account holder as soon as payment clears, and nothing is held on your card while they take their time.

What the institutions decide

Some limits belong to the banks, not to us, and the quote can’t know them in advance.

  • How much history they keep. We ask for as many months as you order, up to 24, and each institution decides how far back its own records go.
  • Whether they offer statements. Not every bank shares its statements through Plaid, and credit cards, loans and investment accounts have none here. Transactions still cover those banks and cards.
  • Brokerage and retirement accounts. Their holdings and trades are not part of transactions or statements, and are not offered yet. An institution that has them says so when you choose it.
